A common thread among all Vivian Sheldon Epstein’s books is the elimination of prejudice and the growth of the individual through knowledge that the world is open to us with many possibilities. Role models of the past are depicted to inspire young people. The author believes that changes in societal attitudes can best be created by instilling positive ideas within young people.

Vivian Sheldon Epstein wrote her first book, History of Colorado for Children, in time for the state's centennial in 1976.  She had looked for such a book when her own children were young.  Not finding it, she began doing the research to write one herself when her youngest child went to kindergarten.   That book has since become a staple in Colorado schools.

Her second book, The ABCs of What a Girl Can Be, followed in 1980, The History of Women for Children came out in 1984, The History of Women Artists for Children in 1987, The History of Women Scientists was published in 1994, and her latest, History of Colorado's Women for Children came out in 1998.

Ms. Epstein's many fans marvel over the meticulous research that goes into her books.  She does a wonderful job of informing children about the many contributions that women have made to our society.
